What is a Grampus?
The name probably comes from the Latin for
'Grand Fish' (grandis
piscis) and is a popular name for the black and white
Killer Whale (Orcinus
orca). Technically, the Latin name for Risso's Dolphin
(Grampus
griseus).
Boats and Ships
There have been 10
British warships named HMS Grampus. The first
was a sloop launched in 1731. The most recent was a submarine
launched in 1957 and sunk as a target in 1980.
The US Navy have launched seven
USS Grampus warships: The first
was a schooner launched in 1821 and the last was a submarine launched
in 1944 and scrapped in 1972.
CSS
Grampus was a Confederate river-boat built in 1856, and
sunk in 1862.
Soccer
Nagoya Grampus 8 is a soccer team in the Japanese League 1. Became
known in the UK as the club Gary Lineker played for at the end of
his career.
Railways
